There Are Always Ways to Help…

IMG_5843

Some think the only or best way to help is by giving money to causes, people in need, etc. I have learned something over the years, money can do a lot of good and I would never discourage anyone from giving to worthy causes or helping out someone who is truly in need, BUT there are more ways to help.

Sometimes people aren’t in a position to help financially and feel like there’s nothing they can do. However, we can give our time, energy, and effort to others by volunteering, teaching, mentoring, tutoring, helping people by giving of your services like babysitting, cooking a meal for someone who just had surgery, helping someone move, etc.

Going through our things and giving what we don’t need or no longer use to others who could use it often helps people as well. How many of us have things in storage, stuffed in the back of our closets or the garage, etc that we know we’ll never get around to using again or maybe just bought because it was on sale or thought it would be a good idea at the time and then never used at all? Some can donate blood, which is always in need. Some physically can’t give, but many can.

And let us not forget, sometimes all someone needs is someone to listen without passing judgement. Sometimes people don’t want or need anything of monetary value, they just need a friend to listen, give advice, a hand to hold, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to make them laugh. Sometimes people just need to be reminded how special and loved they are and that there is a reason to go on.

One or many of these things may not be doable, but don’t be discouraged. If you want to give back, pay it forward, or make a difference, there are always ways to do it.

Dear Future Me

pastpresentfuture

So many of us have imagined what we’d say to younger versions of ourselves if we got the chance. Oh the advice we’d give, the wisdom we’d share. Perhaps then we’d have avoided some of the hard times?

I, myself, have written such letters to versions of myself that are long gone. But today, I wondered what I might say to a future versions of myself, were I given the opportunity to meet her. Might it go something like this….

Dear Future Me,

You don’t exist yet, but I’m hoping that when you do and you get the chance to read this that you’ll take what I have to say to heart.

So far, you have spent so much time worrying, over analyzing things, focusing on things that don’t matter in the grand scheme of things, and dwelling on what was instead of what is and what could be. Let me say this, stop. Life is too short to stress so much. If you’re here, able to read this, take a moment to count your blessings and then go out and make the most of the time you have.

How many sleepless nights have you spent worrying about things that worked themselves out in the end? How many times have you needlessly panicked? Let’s not focus so much on what is out of our control or sweat the small things.

Instead, let’s shape the moments we can into ones full of love and laughter. Give when you can. When the hard times come, remember you’ve gotten through worse and push forward believing this too is another hurdle we’ll get over. You may roll your eyes at this, but deep down you know there’s wisdom in what I’m telling you.

Things won’t always be sunshine and roses and nor will they always be dark and depressing. There’s light and dark throughout every stage in life. Find courage in the tough times, let wisdom grace you, and learn from them. Find joy in the wonderful moments, may love touch you, and may you let it do the same for others.

You’ve made it this far, keep going! I believe in you, as do many others. Here’s to tomorrow letting us see its wondrous beauty and all it has in store.

Sincerely,

The you you once knew

*What would you tell the you of tomorrow?*

No Day But Today

Thinking about the movie, Rent

And though I’ve seen it many times

I’ve only now begun to see what the story meant

It’s about more than catchy songs and rhymes

One of the messages it’s sent me

Is that we need to live for today

None of us knows how long we have to be

We’re not promised tomorrow and we’re done with yesterday

It’s easy to get hung up on the past

Or worry incessantly about what hasn’t happened yet

But today is a precious gift that’s not meant to last

Sorrow and anxiety threaten to overtake us, but we must learn not to fret

Nothing is permanent, not the good or the bad

As hard as it may get, learn from the tough days

And be grateful and enjoy the good we’ve had

Take hold of the now and make the most of the todays.

Holidays Aren’t On Tuesdays

20160719_103741

I was lying in bed, half awake this morning and thinking about our trash and recycling going out today. If there’s a holiday on our normal pick-up day, then they pick up the day before.

For some reason, my mind told me that there aren’t holidays on Tuesdays, thinking of Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. Though then I thought about Christmas, Fourth of July, etc and felt really silly. But, I thought my thought would make for a pretty cool blog title. Waste not! I just needed to figure out what I wanted to talk about.

Today’s date is memorable for a few reasons. As stated in my previous blog, today marks four years with WordPress. But, it signifies a couple other things as well.

Sixteen years ago today, I was in a car accident that nearly claimed my life. The circumstances were ones that could have been prevented. But, my friends and I made some stupid decisions and luckily, I can say we’re all still here living our lives. Lessons learned.

The last thing that makes today memorable is that my daughter, Claralynn turns three months. What an incredible three months it’s been, watching her grow and develop. I’m so blessed.

So today might not be a holiday, but it’s still a special day. People around the world are celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, promotions, new journies, and life in general. Though even without any “special” things going on, I still would say celebrate because you’re here, given another day to love and to live. So, make the most of it!

Yes, No, Maybe So

god-says-no(pp_w661_h440)

How many of us have tried to bargain with God?

“Dear God, there’s this guy that I love and if you make it so we end up together, I won’t ask for anything ever again.”

“God, I have this important job interview tomorrow. If you help me get the job, I’ll get better at going to church.”

“Lord, if you heal my mom, I promise I’ll be a better person. I’ll do whatever you ask, just do this for me please!”

I’ve prayed a prayer or two like these myself. Inevitably, I didn’t get my way most of the time. I usually felt like He either blatantly ignored me or just outright said no. I would often feel slighted, thinking things like,

“If you loved me, then why did you ignore me?”

“I thought you wanted me to be happy.”

“Where are you? Can you even hear me?”

It’s taken me years to realize that just because the answer is no, (or no response seemingly, which is essentially still a no.) well it doesn’t mean He didn’t hear me or doesn’t care. What it means is that He has other things planned for me, better things than I could have ever imagined.

Patience isn’t a strong suit of mine. He’s sure tested me plenty over the years. Sometimes it’s hard to fathom that my stressful moments and heartaches could ever be a part of His plan. Why would He let His child suffer?

But, His will is good and though it sometimes has taken me years to understand why things happen the way that they do, the truth is always revealed.

Often times we want what we want and when we want it. When God doesn’t follow our plan, it can be frustrating. But, that’s usually when He says,

“This isn’t part of My plan and I know you’ll be upset, but in time, you’ll see why I took you in another direction. Now is the time to wait, listen, and follow the path I’m setting for you.”

His plan and ours often clash, but in the end, which one would you rather use? Me, well, I choose to keep trusting Him. I’ll undoubtedly get frustrated plenty along the way, but He’ll keep reminding me it’ll all be worth it.

Life is one heck of an addiction

cf4461755e97992cd013795e125d0493

When you think of addictions, it’s easy to turn your mind to drugs and alcohol. They’re definitely abused by many around the world. But, there’s so much more out there that consumes us, that we find hard to let go of, that we choose to let control us. It’s a choice we willingly make every day. What will be more important to us today and what will we do to hold onto it?

Sex, gambling, cults, wars, and other things can be addictive too. They can consume you and lead you to dark times. Ah and let’s not forget about caffeine! Many are addicted to that and don’t realize it, that is until and unless they don’t have it. Then you end up with migraines and not feeling so hot. If your body is used to it and you suddenly take it away, your body revolts. It’s one of the more innocent ones, but it’s still an addiction if you just have to have it. But, it’s all your choice. When people say that they don’t have a choice, they’re making excuses to hold onto their vices. It’s not easy to quit, to walk away, or to get help. In fact, it’s really hard, seemingly impossible. But, it’s always possible to get help, to find your way out of its grasp on you.

There are other addictions that many don’t even think of as such. Some of these are, but are not limited to, your career or relationships. How many times has someone said, “My career cost me my marriage or my relationship with my kids” or “When I was dating so and so, I lost my friends.”? Your career didn’t end your marriage, you did. You chose it over your marriage. Your relationship didn’t end your friendships, you chose your partner over them.

Addictions aren’t always easy to recognize. Sometimes they’re hidden in plain sight and are a part of our every day lives that seem commonplace. But, if something or someone becomes more important to us than everything else and we become so fixated that other things and people take a backseat in our lives, then there’s a problem.

I’ve struggled with addiction myself and I didn’t see it until way later. Part of that was because it wasn’t something many associate with addiction. It was hard to admit and own up to. Shame took hold and then anger, mostly at myself, but that I took out on others. Every single day I wake, I fight to keep a clear head, to keep my priorities straight. We all do, it’s just an easier battle for some than others. Life can be one heck of an addiction. So, what’s important to you today and what will you do to hold onto it?

The Ties That Bind

DSCN4127

As I mourn the loss of a dear friend

I am reminded that life still goes on

13 days ago, my daughter was born

I could let grief swallow me whole

But what good would that do those I have left?

Throughout life, we face so much

There are hardships – financially, physically, and emotionally

We face death and say goodbye to so many we love

Ridicule, pain, loss, and more threaten to pull us down

But if that’s all we focus on, then yes life is indeed sad

However, we also are blessed with so much good as well

Friendships, family, laughter, joy, and love

New jobs, new homes, children and grandchildren too

There’s so much to look forward to if we have our eyes open to it all

We must learn from the hard times and appreciate the good ones

It’s not just about the day we’re born or the day we die

It’s about all of the days in between

Did we make it a life worth living?

That’s what we need to ask ourselves while we’re still here

And do all we can to make sure that answer is yes

It’s hard in the face of death to focus on life

Succumbing to grief would be so easy

But I believe that those we lose would want us to keep going

To make the most of the time we’re given

And to continue to strengthen the ties that bind

So that’s what I am trying to do

Live my life in such a way that would honor those I have lost

To make the most of each day that He gives me

Loving those I have left

And letting them love me
