Once Upon a Time….

My daughter wanted me to read a story. Without a book in hand, I simply made one up. 😉

Once upon a time, because she thinks all stories start that way, there was a little girl named Claralynn. She loved to sing, dance, and play all day.

She got out of bed one morning, changed her clothes, and then flew down the stairs. (Maybe she quite literally flew! It’s a story and within such things, anything can be true!) She felt so hungry that she could eat a house, though, why would you want to eat a house? So, she grabbed an apple and devoured it. Still hungry, she looked through the cupboard and found cheese crackers. (Who doesn’t love a good cheese cracker now and then?) So, she ate those too!

La la la la, she was singing a little tune. She envisioned a furry red Muppet named Elmo. Together, they sang his song Elmo’s world and played with his fish, Dorothy. After awhile, Elmo had to go. Other kids want to see him too, he’s quite the popular fellow, don’t you know? So, they sang one more song and then it was time to move on.

Next, she wandered through the house, which became a rainforest. Rain, rain, go away! But it wouldn’t go away, not just yet. While taking in the new view, Wyatt flew by. Claralynn exclaimed, “Super Why!” He turned, smiled, and waved hello. Claralynn waved back. He and his merry band of Super Readers landed and decided to play with her in the trees for awhile.

As the rain slowed, it was time for them to go. They said their goodbyes and she made her way through the rainforest. She went into the familiar living room she’s known for as long as she can recall. (To a toddler, as long as she can recall isn’t long to us, but to her it’s a lifetime.) She turned on some music. She decided then to have a dance party. She danced for what felt like hours.

Dancing can sure tire a little girl out, so Claralynn switched the music from party music to lullabies. She laid down on the couch and covered herself up with her favorite purple blanket. It felt soft upon her bare arms. She snuggled into it and soon she was asleep.

Awhile later, Claralynn awoke. She grabbed a cup of milk and a peanut butter sandwich, had herself a late lunch, and then decided it was time to play again. She put her dishes in the sink, because that’s where dirty dishes go after all.

Claralynn went potty on the toilet, because that’s what big girls do and after she washed her hands, she put on her shoes and went outside to play. She saw her friend and he saw her too. He waved and she waved back. They ran around, kicking a brightly colored ball for awhile and then decided to go on the slide. They took turns, as that’s what polite people do. (Gotta teach them young, you know!)  Later, they rode on rockets to the moon. Within your head, it takes but moments to make the journey. Before long, they were standing on the moon, looking at their world far below. “The world is so small!” Exclaimed Claralynn.” Her friend nodded vigorously.

They explored the moon for a bit. Looking at the galaxy around them was so wondrous. After a little while, they found that they missed home though. So, they ate a quick snack (nom nom nom) and flew home. Traveling to the moon and back took longer than they thought. It was getting late. Her friend needed to go to back to his house. (Surely his mommy and daddy were missing him so!) They said their farewells and she watched him walk down the street a little before heading in.

Claralynn saw dinner on the table and climbed onto a chair between her mommy and daddy. As fun as her solo adventures had been, it was nice to be with her family again. (I’m thinking they were there all the while, but sometimes a girl just needs to feel like she’s doing things on her own.)

After dinner, she went potty on the toilet, again, my what a truly big girl Claralynn is! Then, it was bath time. She was washed from head to toe. Among the bubbles and foam letters, her day’s adventures fell away. She splashed water all over. There was a small pool on the floor. (Maybe she’d play there later too!)

After her bath, she put her pjs on. She got a cup of milk, sat on her mommy’s lap, and daddy started to read one of her favorite stories about settling down for the night. “Read book!” Claralynn shouted when he finished. Okay, little lady, one more book. This time, her mommy read about green eggs and ham. After spending time with Sam I Am, it was time to brush teeth. So she did just that! (Ooh sparkly!)

She gave her mommy and daddy their nightly hugs and kisses, squeezes too! She went upstairs, climbed into bed, laid down her head, and cuddled with one of her Mickey Mouse toys, don’t forget about Minnie! With her lullabies playing once more, it wasn’t long before she drifted off. Sweet dreams of her fun day began and fun ideas for tomorrow filled her head too. Goodnight, my sweet sleepy head. God bless you, my love. See you in the morning, then new adventures will begin.

Through the Open Door

IMG_9908

Through the open door, adventure awaits

You can fly with your new fairy wings

Soar through the sky, into fantasy’s gates

Play with elves, nymphs, and a unicorn that sings

Through the open door, anything can happen

You can run as fast as a cheetah does

Or find a friendly centaur to take campin’

Ever want to step inside a beehive and listen to the buzz?

Through the open door, that’s where you witness the magic

Climb a great sycamore with the squirrels and chipmunks

See a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly is a great trick

Have you ever played with an otter that has such spunk?

Through the open door, you can decide what to do or where to go

You can even decide to be someone or something new

Want to help the sun rise or help a great river flow?

Dance with a dinosaur or live in a tree, there’s nothing you can’t do

Logic Versus Emotion & A Tribute to Leonard Nimoy

quote-logic-is-the-beginning-of-wisdom-not-the-end-leonard-nimoy-136019

As Spock once said, “Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.”

I firmly believe that to be true. To be able to think logically is important. But, I also feel that it is important to view things with an air of a whimsical nature. The ability to use one’s mind is vital, but not just the part that knows facts and gets us through our daily tasks. It’s also important to use the parts that control our emotions. Often, many of us don’t balance the two out. Some of us think more with our logical side, while others think more with our emotional side, i.e. with our heart as people call it. I try to have a healthy balance, but sometimes that doesn’t work out too well for me. I am definitely a highly emotional being. I am capable of rational and logical thinking. Sometimes, I am too logical in some people’s opinion. But, often I am viewed as being too sensitive and overly emotional. That’s just how I am wired, if you will. But, I am trying to work on that.

I think it is healthy for us to use both sides of our brain and it is also good to challenge our minds as well. I like to work on Sudoku puzzles, word puzzles, read, and sometimes make up random games to keep my brain active. I also like to come up with innovative ideas and analyze situations and figure out why something works the way it does or why someone acts the way that they do. And then sometimes I like to daydream, think of things that, as far as I know, aren’t humanly possible, and delve into the imaginative part of my brain. Part of me is highly creative and another part of me is highly logical and about concrete facts.

I think if we use too much of one part and not enough of another that we’re wasting our potential. We’re so much more than we know. To explore our minds is, in my humble opinion, essential. I think we were meant to create, think outside the box, and use our imaginations. I think that if we shut ourselves off from feeling, letting all the emotions within us drive us forward, we’re limiting ourselves. But, I also feel if we let that part of us take over, we can become totally irrational and cause all sorts of trouble for others and ourselves. On the the flip side, yes, it is good to be able to use knowledge of things like science, math, literature, and history. Science and math in fact are used daily by many people, even though we don’t always view it that way. But, balancing your checkbook, measuring precise amounts of ingredients when cooking, using home remedies to cure ailments, fixing/renovating things around the home, and so on use them both. It is good to be able to learn and use useful facts and skills to get us through life. But if one only strives to think logically and doesn’t open their mind to feeling and letting their emotions guide them, it becomes a life, I feel, that is not fulfilling. So again, I will reiterate that I feel it is important to be both logical and emotional beings.

I think even Mr. Spock knew that and referenced such thoughts more than once. It is such a sad time as many around the world mourn Leonard Nimoy. He brought so much joy to so many. I know some think it is folly to mourn the lives of the famous. But, I think it’s okay to be sad about those who influenced us, taught us, and brought us joy through their acting, music, artwork, literature, and even athleticism. It is especially sad when those who shared their gifts with the world showed us that they too are human, like the rest of us, and gave what they could to those around them and not just to look good in front of the media, but because they genuinely cared for others. I didn’t know Leonard personally, but he seemed to be one amazing guy who gave back to the community. He cared about his fans and did what he could to show that. So, right now I will use my emotional side and say that you are missed by so many. You gave so much to this world with your talents and just by being who you are. Thank you for all you did, for all you gave. May we keep you alive in our memories of all you contributed, showed us, and taught us.

Stuck In Wonderland

Image

Crazy, chaotic, & stressful

That about summed up my life

I’d often daydream

Imagining myself away from this place

Somewhere fun, without any worries to ruin my day

Come with me, fly on a magic carpet

Imagine it and it’ll happen

Animals talk and trees do too

Chase a white rabbit for awhile

Would you care to have tea with me?

Stroll with me down a golden path

Make a wish or two

And watch them come true

What’s that you say?

Oh silly me, make that wishes three for thee

But too far down the rabbit hole I must have fell this time

The further from reality I stray

Wherever I look, danger seems to follow

The sky gets darker and darker

And an evil queen wants me dead

My genie vanished

No ruby slippers that’ll take me home

Someone call my name

Wake me, please

Save me from this place

They call it Wonderland

A magical place

But they forgot to mention

Just how twisted magic can be

Turning childhood fantasies into nightmares

As stressful as real life can be

I realized then perhaps it’s not so bad after all

Hurry, the queen is chasing me!

And my magic carpet has gone M.I.A.

Wake me now and save the day

The white rabbit is shouting something to me

But his voice has become distorted

The wicked witch joined the hunt for my head

I beg of you, please

Save me before I end up dead

Oh silly girl, don’t you know?

You’re not asleep at all

Though it is all inside your head

Focus now on reality instead

For what you see is what you get

No more Wonderland for me

One more glimpse back

I toss the key into the mist

And walk forward toward the light

For that’s the right way to go

Not sideways or upside down

Going backwards is counterproductive

I like to go on an adventure now and then

But sometimes reality is more thrilling

And definitely worth living in

Virtual Dinner Party

Rick Mallery wrote a blog that I found fascinating and I thought perhaps I’d like to try my hand at the idea. If anyone else upon reading this wants to try, go for it and let me know so I can see who attended yours!

The rules are simple:

Throw a dinner party

– Five guests and oneself. While relatives are permitted, it will be more interesting if guests are public figures – dead or alive, speaking any language – or even fictional characters.

– In turn, tag five others to hold Virtual Parties of their own. I won’t tag anyone, but like I said, if you feel the urge to do this yourself, please do!

Menu: Look at the guest list and tell me who would have time to eat? I think we shall have a buffet so that everyone can have what they want and if they are fickle, they have a lot to choose from as their taste buds change throughout the evening.

Location: This gang could hang anywhere. In this instance, I have chosen the great city of Paris. I have always wanted to go there. We can see the Eiffel Tower from where we dine. We found a quiet place where we can eat, chat, and not be disturbed by the tourists.

My guest list shall comprise of: William Shakespeare, Audrey Hepburn, Emily Dickinson, Jewel Kilcher, and Antonio Vivaldi.

William Shakespeare

Image

The world knows him for the many works he’s written. I have always found his works fascinating and thought that perhaps it’d be great to sit down with him and discuss literature and ask him where he got the ideas for Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, and so on. To get inside his brain would be most interesting indeed. And he and Emily could share their stories for inspiration. I think that he would see Audrey and perhaps see a muse and another sonnet would be written. He sits and absentmindedly eats at the fish in front of him, more engrossed with the conversation about art, literature, and music. He doesn’t mind sharing a few tales of his own.

Audrey Hepburn

Image

The lovely lady sits down next to William, his eyes light up when she speaks. She tells us all about her work with UNICEF, the theater, and ways that she’d like to see the world better itself. Her heart is a compassionate one, one that hurts for the many who struggle. Jewel listens intently and begins jotting down lyrics on a napkin. Vivaldi hasn’t said much, for he can’t truly understand her, though he too was entranced by her charm and beauty. Emily seems to both admire her and have a certain disliking as well, though she never voices any ill thoughts she might have towards her. Audrey has a lot to say and it is she that does a lot of talking throughout the evening. I too find myself entranced by her passion for people. She didn’t eat much, she nibbled on the salad in front of her. Emily figured she was worried about her weight, though did admire her in the little black dress she wore.

Emily Dickinson

Image

She is definitely one of the quietest of the group, though she has a lot to say with her eyes as she watches the group. Though when William turned his attention to her for part of the evening, she lit up. He’s been a major influence to her writing throughout the years. She had so much to ask him, so much she wanted to say to him. They spoke of literature for awhile and while it was intense, the rest of us simply listened. At times the mood was dark, but always intriguing. They wondered at one point if they might collaborate on a piece sometime in the future. Her plate was full of nothing but organic food, food she said should be natural, only what has been grown from the earth, not tainted by anything unnatural that could be harmful to our bodies. Listening to her talk about death, immortality, love, and humanity was most interesting and I had questions for her about her writing, which I waited to ask until her talk with William seemed to fade out. I asked them both about their ideals, the influences. Jewel was still writing on that napkin of hers, it by now was all the way unfolded and you could see the dark ink more than the white of the napkin.

Jewel Kilcher

Image

The poet, singer, and songwriter spoke to us about love, the beauty of the world, and wanting to do more to help. Her and Audrey had shared quite a bit of conversation there. She sang to us for awhile as well. It was amazing, like a little concert just for us. I asked her if I might sing a little with her and she smiled that smile of hers and started to play her guitar once more and we sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from the Wizard of Oz. After the music quieted, she asked if she might have Audrey’s napkin so that she could write some more as the mood would strike as hers was already full. Audrey handed it to her, after Jewel agreed to partner with her on a philanthropy project. In between writing lyrics and talking, she did manage to eat quite a bit of the pasta that was on her plate. She figured she’d just walk it off later.

Antonio Vivaldi

Image

He was the most quiet throughout the evening, mostly just taking everything in. He admired the beauty of the ladies and the way that William could turn a phrase. For a part of the evening, he asked in his native tongue if he might play for us a little while. So while we ate and quietly talked, his violin produced such beautiful music. Earlier in the evening, he did ask if he might say grace. Whether anyone had an issue with it or not, no one argued with him. I didn’t understand a word of it, but it sounded beautiful. He ate a little bread, ciabatta I think was the closest they could get to what he was hoping to have. There was cheese, a little fruit, and with that he seemed satisfied. Listening to him speak, I imagined myself in Venice. Perhaps my next dinner party should be in Italy.
