The Four Letter Word

Winter_Wonderland_Pac

Today’s topic is what many from where I live call the four letter word. I live in Wisconsin and if you’re from here or even visited, you know that one thing we’re known for is cold winters. They do call the city where our football team plays, The Frozen Tundra. 😉 Some absolutely love winter, the cold, and snow. Some like to ski, snowboard, go sledding, ice skate, etc. Though, there are those of us who are not terribly fond of the white stuff. Shoveling, driving in it, and just looking at it after awhile gets old. 😉

Snow is something I have grown accustomed to, as I have lived with white winters my entire life. My personal opinion of the cursed stuff is that it looks beautiful on tree branches and hey, one must have it on Christmas Day. However, I grow very tired of looking at it fairly quickly. I don’t like the snow, ice, slush, and cold weather. I don’t like the darker days. Snow, blech! I often joke around saying that I was born in the wrong state. Some would say to me, ” Why don’t you move?” Well, it’s not so simple to pack up your life and just leave. When your family, friends, and all you’ve ever known is here, it is difficult to truly imagine living anywhere else. I am a Wisconsinite, through the rain, sleet, and snow.

I do think it can be fun for many too and wouldn’t begrudge anyone for enjoying it. Watching kids build snow forts, have snowball fights, make snow angels and snowmen, and just enjoy the wintry days is refreshing. I know too that there’s a place for everything. The earth needs its time to rest and rejuvenate, so then when spring comes, we’re ready for rebirth and renewal. We may complain about the snow and cold in the meantime though. 😉

Since I do live here and endure it every winter, I do try to make the best of it. I look out the window when snow is gently falling and find beauty in it. I like to watch the few creatures who brave our cold beauty frolic in the snow. I do look forward to taking my young daughter sledding and building our snow masterpieces. There’s fun to be had and beauty within it, if we take the time to see it. Even if snow isn’t your cup of tea and you prefer warmer weather, try to see snow’s place in the world around us and appreciate it for the good it brings.

My Tribute to Wisconsin

Image

From the land of the frozen tundra, I say hello

Where cheese is made & beer does freely flow

Born & raised in this place they call Wisconsin

This is where many of my friends are & also my kin

There are times when I dream of moving away

Because of the many cold & snowy days

But in the end, I find it difficult to leave this place

It’s like Cheers here, so many know my name & face

Those I hold most dear to my heart live here

So away from my home land, I am not ready to steer

And hey there are some beautiful sights here to see

Like spring time in Wisconsin, nature in its most wondrous glory

Come with me to Little Green and swim for awhile

Or let us go the Menomonee River Parkway & walk a few miles

See the ducks as they fly over Devil’s Lake

Or gaze upon the glorious sunrises in Cottage Grove as you wake

From Milwaukee all the way up to Green Bay & beyond

This is my home & of it I am quite fond

And even if I should ever from this place depart

Wisconsin will always be where I got my start

And know what no matter where I might be

I will always be loyal to my sports teams

Green & gold run deep within my veins each & every day

As does my love for the Brew Crew, no matter how bad we play

There’s just something about this place I call home

I have had plenty of chances to leave & yet from here I won’t roam

Perhaps someday I will find the strength to leave

But as you can see now, my love for my home is on my sleeve

Wisconsin, how I really do love you

Anyone who knows me knows this to be true

And as it has from the very start

So shall it always be that it has my heart

Winter Can Be Kind Of Swell

Penguins

Through the wind and the freezing rain

It becomes increasingly difficult to ignore the pain

My knees are crying out to me

It would be best for us to rest, can you not see?

Tis the season when Bronchitis stalks me

I beg with all my might for it to flee

But like a stubborn child unwilling to submit

It decides it’s going to be something of a twit

Soon the snow will be here for a long unwanted stay

Though I ask it politely to leave, it won’t go away

Get out the shovels, coats, hats, gloves, boots, & snowbrushes too

Make way for slick roads, icy sidewalks, cold days, and say hello to the flu

Oh but it’s not as bad as I make it seem

See how upon the trees the snow gleams?

There’s sledding, skating, skiing, snowmobiling, and forts to build as well

Sometimes I admit, I suppose winter can be kind of swell

Reading a book all curled up under my favorite fuzzy blanket

And watching the Packers play on our awesome television set

Hot meals, hot cocoa, a warm fire, Christmas, and some cuddling too

It’s not so bad when I remember I get to spend it with you

A short story to pass the time

Autumn Leaves
The frigid cold grips my bones as the October wind seeps into my skin. I don’t mind as much as I normally might, not today. I look into the sky and see the golden sun greeting me and I know today will be a good day. I stop to look at my feet and see the brightly colored leaves beneath me. Hues of purple, red, orange, and yellow are scattered on the ground as far as my eyes can see, which granted isn’t that far I suppose, but it seems endless to me.

I ponder the days events and as nice as it would have been to stay in bed, I know things must get done. There are bills to pay, plans to be made, a birthday party to plan for, and so much more. Rest will come in due time, but that time isn’t right now. So, I clutch my coat closer to my body as another gust of wind attacks me and starting walking forward once more.

I must have slipped into a daze as I was walking and I am not sure for how long I was lost in my own little world, but a voice calling my name brought me back.

“Miranda!” shouted a familiar voice.

I turned around to see my sister rushing towards me. I admit I was a bit surprised to see her, but not unpleasantly so.

“Lexi? I didn’t think you were coming into town until Saturday; why didn’t you call?”

“It was a last minute decision, decided to come here on a whim late last night and I didn’t want to wake you.” She still sounded a bit out of breath.

“I see, well, I am on my way to pick up a couple of things for Drew’s birthday party this weekend and then pay a couple of bills. My car is in the shop and Greg couldn’t spare his truck today because he was going to be all over town for work today, so I was on my way to the bus stop, but perhaps you wouldn’t mind giving me a lift since you’re here?” I asked ever so sweetly.

“Yeah, that’s fine. That will give us a chance to talk before your hubby and kids get home for the evening.” Lexi said with a smile.

“It wasn’t just a random decision to come early was it?” I asked suspiciously.

“Not quite, no, though the reason did just come to me last night.” Lexi admitted.

“Well then spill it.” I urged her as we turned to cross the street where her black Explorer was parked.

“I won tickets to tomorrow night’s hockey game and thought it would make a good early birthday present for Drew. Would you mind if I took Drew to dinner and the game, spend some quality time with my nephew?” Lexi asked.

“I mean, does he have anything going on at school or do you guys have plans?” Lexi continued.

“We were actually just going to spend the evening cleaning the house and getting things ready for the party this weekend, but I can spare Drew from that for the evening.” I laughed as I know how much Drew hates cleaning, even if it is for his party.

“Great, sorry about the last minute notice, but I had just won them at work, been waiting to see who won for weeks now, was hoping to win so I could surprise Drew with them. I didn’t tell anyone before because I didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up. I had a backup plan if I hadn’t won, so don’t look at me like that. Anyway, I didn’t have time to call while there. By the time I got home, it was late, thanks to that project I told you about last week. It’s been ten months and we’re still not making any real headway, wish my boss would figure things out so we could wrap this up already; I have a few pending projects I’d like to give some attention to.”  Lexi vented.

“Ten months is a long time to not at least have a direction to go with it.” I agreed.

“Yeah, it is. I am not here to focus on that right now though. While my boss is arguing with the client and belittling his secretary, I took a couple of days for myself before I exploded. I want to enjoy the nice autumn day, perhaps have a pumpkin latte, and spend some quality time with you while I can before I have to go back home and deal with reality again.” Lexi sighed and tiredly smiled at me.

“It will be a bit hectic running errands and getting things ready for the weekend, so I am not sure how much time you’ll get to relax.” I told her.

“Running errands with you sounds a lot less stressful to me than being in Boston right now.” Lexi said.

“Yeah, I suppose it does. Well, unlock the doors so we can get to it.” I clutched my coat even tighter to me still as another burst of bitter wind passed through me.

She unlocked the doors so we could get in. I buckled up while she started the car. As the engine roared to life, I looked at my sister and thanked God for her showing up today. I am happy the sun is out, but that waiting outside for the buses today with that wind wouldn’t have been fun. I knew today was going to be a good day and seeing Lexi just reinforced that thought in my mind.

Life is full of unexpected events, some good and some bad. It’s not those circumstances that define our lives and who we are, it’s how we handle them that shows our character. When my car broke down, initially I was angry and wondered how I’d ever get everything taken care of. When I took a few moments to stop and think things through and weighed my options, I realized the situation wasn’t as bleak as it first had seemed. The weather this morning made me want to stay in bed, till I took a good look at the sun peering through the windows. I decided to have a better outlook on things and then that’s when things began to work out. My sister showing up is such a blessing. Looking out the window, I glance at the sun and smile, grateful for it’s reminder that life is good when we let it be.

Ode To the Four Seasons

Sometimes I complain about the weather

For a little while, it’s too hot

Though in reality, it’s not the heat

It’s the humidity that has me beat

For what seems like forever at the time

It’s a winter wonderland

But outside is not where I want to go

Because that usually means I have to shovel snow

But despite all my whining

And my body’s protesting

I actually feel quite grateful to live here

I get to see four seasons every year

God cloaks the world in many colors

Leaves of forest and emerald green grace our trees for awhile

Then they change their gowns

Turning into beautiful shades of purple, red, orange, yellow, brown

Squirrels, marmots, and the like scamper to and fro during the warmer months

And then take a nice long nap while the frost and snow takes its toll

Growing, evolving, & changing is a part of nature and all life

Throughout, we’ll know joy, pain, anger, hunger, excitement, and strife

What a wonder this world is to watch and enjoy

I’m in awe with every change God makes in it and in us

Winter, Spring, Summer, & Fall

I am glad to be here to enjoy them all

My Ode to Autumn

The air turns cool, winter is nearly here

Though right now is autumn’s turn to shine

The leaves change color and begin to fall

It’s so beautiful to watch the seasons change

God surely made a truly special place

Homecoming dances and parades

Raking of the leaves that are strewn about our lawns

Homemade cider and pumpkin flavored everything

Halloween costumes, candy, and decorations

So much to do, so much to see, and many things we can be

It is true that I prefer the warmer air

But there is still so much joy to be found here

Bonfires, cozying up underneath blankets, time to cuddle

Hot cocoa and hot meals

The smells of autumn are mouthwatering and heartwarming

Each season comes and goes before we know it

So we should find ways to enjoy each one

Make the most of this autumn season

Smile, laugh, make memories

For none of us knows when it will be our last
